After being captured in Cuba, Mason has been transported overseas and imprisoned in a Soviet labor camp in 1963.
He works with a fellow inmate, Soviet dissident Viktor Reznov, to lead an uprising. The plan involves following a sequence of 8 steps to escape, including seizing weapons, creating diversions, and stealing a motorcycle.
The full prison breakout ultimately fails, with Reznov staying behind so Mason can escape aboard a passing train.
